Student voice and Agency

Student Voice, Agency and Leadership

At Wilandra Rise Primary School, we believe learning is a collaborative process between students and teachers. We know that students are more engaged and have improved outcomes and attitudes towards school when they feel a part of their own learning process. WRPS defines the terms of voice, agency and leadership as:

Student Voice:
Students get the chance to work together with teachers and classmates to shape what they learn, how they learn it, and how their progress is measured.

Student Agency:
This is all about how much choice and control students have in their learning. When students have agency, they take charge of their education, make decisions, and become independent, self-motivated learners.

Student Leadership:

Leading by listening, representing others and advocating for their peers.

Student Feedback

We value the voice and feedback of our students across the school and use programs such as PIVOT and the Attitude to Schools Survey to discover what students are enjoying and finding challenging in their learning as well as suggestions for the future. This data also helps us to identify the wellbeing needs of our students. Teachers then use this information to drive practice in their classrooms and include more of what students want to see.

Student Representative Council

Wilandra Rise’s Student Representative Council (SRC) serves to advocate for the students. They represent student voice within the school and actively contribute to the operations of the school by putting forward the opinions, ideas and concerns of their peers.

Vic SRC

We are currently partnered with VicSRC to engage students from years 3-6 in the ‘Teach the Teacher’ program. This program supports students to:

  • Collect data on issues that matter to their peers.
  • Present ideas to improve the well-being and learning of students to staff.
  • Discuss their ideas in collaboration with staff to develop an action plan.
  • Implement improvements to drive whole school change.

Student Leadership Opportunities

Year 6 students at WRPS are provided with opportunities to lead in a variety of roles. They participate in learning throughout the year focusing on the qualities of a good leader and developing their leadership skills. We currently offer the following leadership opportunities:

  • School Captains
  • House Captains
  • SWPBS Captains
